Sod Install FAQ's

Should I install Sod on top of existing grass?

It is Highly Recommended that you don't

  • Can work Depending on the type of sod installing vs type of grass/ weeds below, and The Weather
  • Won't be level and leads to scalping when mowing
  • As the sod smothers and kills the vegetation below it will compost creating heat, drying out the new sod (in the summer it will kill the sod)
  • Sod needs soil contact to root in.

What is Sod

A Sod Piece is a piece of Grass cut out of the ground in the right conditions for replanting, or transferring.

How To Maintain Sod

  • Very Smooth, Very Flat Level Ground
  • Make sure you have proper irrigation
  • Treating the soil to ensure:
    Proper Ph Level
    Proper Nitrogen and Iron Levels
    Remove big pebbles and rocks
  • Laying the sod:
Certain Patterns are necessary specially on hills.
Cut pieces with a machete around landscaping and borders
    Cut hole around sprinkler heads
    Make sure all corners touch
Cut smaller pieces to fill holes
  • Roll over for better root contact
  • Walk on it
  • watch for bugs, fungus, and nitrogen levels.
  • No Weed Killers 30 days
  • No Mowing for 30 days
  • Constant but careful water
  • Determine regular water schedule.

How Often Should I Water New Sod?

As a Rule of thumb: twice a day the first week (1/2 inch each time) , once a day the second week, then resume 'regular' watering*
* Strongly depends on the weather.

Must be adjusted for:

  • rain (rain sensor)
  • heat
  • cold

Re-Sod Vs. Plugs

Plugs should be used for plugging small holes

spreading them too far apart may cause weeds to take over before they can fill in

Sod leaves no room for weeds to grow.
